About Southborough Primary
Southborough Primary School, has been serving the community of Independence City and the surrounding areas since October 16, 1989. The location of the school always begs the question; why is Southborough Primary in Independence City and not South Boro? The genesis of the school bears many twists and turns. The school was slated to be built on government land in the community of South Boro, However, when the scheduled groundbreaking date arrived, the land no longer belonged to the government . The company Telecommunications of Jamaica (TOJ), which was once government-owned was divested and became a privately-owned company. The government had already secured funding through the IDB, a multi-lateral agency to build the school; so land was secured in Independence City. Since the project was named after the community in which it was originally going to be built, the school was called SOUTHBOROUGH PRIMARY SCHOOL. It must be noted that the spelling by the Ministry of Education is different from that of the community South Boro. Consequently, a part of South Boro was planted in Independence City.
The school started with a team headed by retired Principal Icah Small, eight teachers and 96 boys and 90 girls. Since then the school has grown from strength to strength. Today, the school’s enrollment stands at over 1,200 students, forty (40) teachers, ten (10) ancillary workers and four (4) watchmen.
The school is recognized for its academic achievements as it has consistently performed well in all national exams. Through its outstanding performance in the Grade Four Literacy Test, the school is regarded as a platinum school by the Ministry of Education; the scores are consistently above 85% in the Literacy Test. The PEP scores have shown that the school consistently surpasses the national average. Students have also earned government and national scholarships based on their PEP scores.
In its attempt to produce a well-rounded individual, the school has ensured that its students are not only exposed to the curriculum set by the Ministry, but to various extra curricular activities. Through these activities, our students have been able to represent their school in football, netball, track and field, festival, and other clubs and societies, earning trophies, medals and high commendations.
The success of the school could not have been possible without its leadership and the dedicated and hardworking teachers, as well as the support of many stakeholders who have given tremendous help.
Successive boards over the years have also helped to shape the school, and much of its success is due to parents' keen interest in the school and in their children.
The school continues to aspire for the highest standards while ensuring its students are moulded to face the challenges of the world.
